Mount Merapi and Kelut: A History of Eruptions
Mount Merapi, located in central Java, Indonesia, is the most active volcano in Indonesia. It has erupted over 80 times since the year 1000 AD, with its most recent eruption occurring in 2018. Mount Kelut, also located in Java, has erupted over 30 times during the same period, with its largest eruption occurring in 1919 and reaching a scale of 5 on the Volcanic Explosivity Index (VEI).
Volcanic Activity in Indonesia
Indonesia is home to a large number of volcanoes, including 129 active volcanoes. These volcanoes are located along the Sunda Volcanic Arc, which stretches over 3,000 kilometers from northwestern Sumatra to the Banda Sea.
