Indonesian Volcano Erupts, Spewing Lava and Ash

Mount Ruang Eruption Forces Airport Closure

Mount Ruang, a volcano in Indonesia, erupted on Tuesday, sending fiery lava and ash thousands of feet into the night sky. The eruption forced the closure of Sam Ratulangi International Airport in Manado city, located more than 100km from the volcano.

Volcanic Activity in Indonesia

Indonesia is a Southeast Asian archipelago of 270 million people and has over 120 active volcanoes, more than anywhere else in the world. In 2018, the eruption of Indonesia's Anak Krakatau volcano caused a tsunami along the coasts of Sumatra and Java.

Muhammad Wafid, the head of Indonesia's geological agency, said that Ruang's initial eruption sent an ash column two kilometers (12 miles) into the atmosphere. The eruption is continuing, and there is no immediate danger to nearby communities.
